A Nor’Easter is expected to impact Southern New England, New York City, Long Island and New Jersey throughout this weekend.
An area of low pressure is now taking shape to the east of the Mid-Atlantic coastline. It is expected that this low pressure system will strengthen as it slowly moves northward before stalling just south of Long Island on Saturday. From here, this low pressure system is expected to head westward reaching the south coast of New Jersey by Sunday afternoon. Ultimately this low pressure system will weaken and head eastward away from the coastline by early next week.
Winds: Wind gusts of up to 50 to 60 mph will be common this weekend across coastal areas from New Jersey and Long Island northward into coastal Southern New England.
Given the fact that most trees are still fully leafed, these strong wind gusts will likely cause some downed trees and powerlines leading to at least some scattered power outages throughout this weekend.
Further inland, wind gusts of up to 40 to 50 mph are expected this weekend across inland parts of Southern New England, southeastern New York and New Jersey & again, these type of wind gusts could lead to snapped tree limbs and cause some scattered power outages.
Coastal Flooding: The combination of persistent, strong onshore winds, high surf and higher than average astronomical high tides will lead to moderate to major coastal flooding at the time of high tide along the Mid-Atlantic coast.
The worst of the coastal flooding is expected to occur this weekend across coastal Virginia, coastal Maryland, coastal Delaware & along the entire New Jersey coastline. Major coastal flooding looks very likely across these areas.
Further north, minor to possibly moderate coastal flooding at the time of high tide is expected over the next few days across all of coastal New England into Long Island and New York City.
Rainfall: Heavy rain is expected throughout this weekend across much of the Mid-Atlantic states into central and southern New England.
1 to 3 inches of total rainfall can be expected across inland parts of Southern New England and across inland parts of the Mid-Atlantic states.
Closer to the coast, rain totals of 3 to 6 inches are a good possibility across coastal New England & in particular across Cape Cod & coastal Rhode Island. 3 to 5 inches of total rainfall is expected along the Jersey Shore and across a large part of Long Island.
